Weekly Standings Check In - Draft Day

Nothing too groundbreaking to note in the standings this week. The only interesting thing that I've noticed is that Detroit's only 2.5 games behind Cleveland for the lead in the Central division. And it's possible that one of those two teams will win the wild card instead of a team out of the East division. It looks like all the teams in the East are gonna devour each other until one team eventually emerges as the division winner, while the rest will have records around .500...

Oh and today's draft day for the MLB. I have no clue who the Jays will target, but the only one that I don't want them to draft is Wayne Gretzky's kid. For 2 reasons: He's only 18 years old, so lots can change about him after 4 years in college and the 2nd reason is that he's Wayne Gretzky's son. There's no way that he'll get the opportunity to progress quietly in college or the minors. It'll be 10 times worse then the Brett Lawrie situation.

  1. I didn't even realize today was draft day (or that Wayne Gretzky's kid played baseball - but I digress...). Is it simply because we're in a hockey-saturated market, or just that the MLB draft isn't as big a deal as it is in other sports?

  2. It's more that it's such a huuuuge amount of players getting selected and after the first round, there aren't a lot of recognizable names available. This is the first time I've ever noticed it being televised too (on Sportsnet One). I'm gonna watch the first bit before the Jays-Royals game tonight, and then I imagine they'll give updates throughout the game.

  3. I'm going to assume it being televised is something related to the whole 'building for the future' aspect the Jays are trying to push.
