Baseball Book Report - The Complete Game

Today's Baseball Book Report is The Complete Game: Reflections on Baseball and the Art of Pitching by Ron Darling

Now this was the book that I was looking for. An insightful, informative, interesting read on what goes on between a pitcher's ears throughout the course of a game. Darling gives us a description of notable situations that he either experienced or observed as a broadcaster during his career as a starting pitcher for the New York Mets, Oakland A's and a memorable 12 inning outing as a college player at Yale.

By no means is this book for beginners, but at the same time, I felt this book organically worked through everything that Watching Baseball Smarter failed at, but with much more thoughtfulness, flow and attention to detail. I know that I'm not getting into much of the specifics on this one, but if I did, I feel like I'd be spewing out the details of the book verbatim, which would probably ruin your reading experience. Let me just say this: I couldn't stop reading this book. It was compelling and well written, an easy read (in a good way) and I pretty much read it cover to cover over the course of 2 days, so I will give 4 out of 5 baseballs.

  1. It seems that if you're looking for a book to help you get more of a feel for the strategies involved in baseball, you need to read something by someone who's played the game. Sounds like Hemple has not?

  2. Nope, one of his previous books is about how to get a ball at a baseball game.
